Beeple’s artwork “Worst Case,” painted on March 20th, 2020, shows the struggle that humans have to go through, just right after their happy and fun holidays. The New Year's mood suddenly turned gloomy as people were forced to stay locked away inside their homes as sickness and death inch closer each day. I remember having a great time in Japan with my family, just right before Covid-19 was found and during New Years, we were celebrating and walking around in malls happily. But then, suddenly, news came out that there was a new virus spreading. When I first heard of it, I didn’t really care about it, the memory is so vague that I only remember hearing the name they gave to the virus and wondering why it was named Covid-19 and not Covid-20. The past me wouldn’t’ve guessed that soon, I would be locked inside my home and studying online as I fight for my safety. Though before the pandemic started, there was also another crisis, air pollution. Air pollution was a really big deal that caused health problems, so people had to wear masks. It was like the air pollution was trying to let us get used to masks because a few months later, we would have to wear masks everywhere we went.
It was like a sudden flood had poured into the cities and civilizations, so people had to stay indoors to survive. Though this flood is very deadly, it had killed more than 11 thousand people as of March 20th, 2020, and has gone up at a really fast pace in about only 2 years, it increased to about 5.8 million people as of February 11th, 2022. When I went outside for the first time during the pandemic, everyone was scary, whenever someone would cough or sneeze, I would turn and walk away. Saturdays were always family days, and we would watch movies in the theater, but since Covid-19 started, places with a lot of people were avoided, including the theater, which means I haven’t watched a movie in the theater in about 1 and a half years or had any human interactions outside my family. It makes you aware of all the people around you and makes you less sociable.
This pandemic has caused worldwide problems to every country on planet Earth and the ‘Worst Case’ scenario is that it will continue for many more years to come. It was like the apocalypse where the water would be poisonous and whoever touched it or come close to it would get sick or die, so people have to stay indoors to avoid the virus that is crawling everywhere you go. We would be locked inside our homes sitting in front of a computer screen, sitting and slouching as we learn and work from home.
While writing this pice of work, I had to analyze and understand the meaning in this artwork. It might seem easy but there are more depths you can go through if you look closely enough. For example, I gave a comparision between this picture and floods, where both can be destructive and cause harm to us in many ways. We would be able to survive somehow but there will also be deaths lots of losses along the way. It can also impact us both physically and mentally in many ways, either temporary or permanently.
