Character Archetypes Practice

Prompt: Pat and Sam have been best friends since they were sixteen. Two months ago, they had had a huge fight and haven’t talked since. What happened? Why haven’t they made up?

While writing this archetype, I had to think about how the character will act and feel, and give a clear reason to why things were happening in the story, I've also chosen to write in 3rd person omniscient instead of 3rd person limited, which is why the perspectives change throughout the story.

Archetype #1:

Pat and Sam have been best friends since they were sixteen. Two months ago, they had had a huge fight and haven’t talked since. This all started when Pat was chilling on her bed, she felt bored so she thought that she could go out with her best friend Sam. So, she texted him and asked if he wanted to go out, when Sam saw the message, he replied that he was really busy studying at home so he couldn’t come.

Disappointed, she decided to go out and have fun on her own, she got ready and went out. Her first destination was her favorite café, she sat down and ordered some drinks and snack, but while she was enjoying her snacks, she looked outside and saw Sam laughing and having fun while walking down the streets with someone else. She was super shocked and felt betrayed, she was also mad but the thoughts that were going through her head was way worse. She felt as if their friendship meant nothing to Sam and that he was always pretending to be nice to her, but behind her back, he would gossip and talk bad about her. So, she went home and locked herself in her room.

After a few days, Sam asked Pat if she wanted to hangout, but because of what happened, she refused and told Sam that she wanted some space between them. Sam panicked when he saw that message and asked what he’d done wrong, but Pat told him that she would explain it later once she cooled down, so Sam gave her some space. Days and weeks passed, then 2 months, which was when Pat was ready to talk to Sam again, she messaged him and explained how she saw Sam outside with someone else and having fun, and lied about studying at home. Once Sam saw this, he quickly replied that he was going out to get medicine for his grandmother but he met his cousin along the way.

This first archetype was the girl or "Pat" being the type of person to overthink, where I tried to show how she would close herself in and overthink about things without trying to find a solution or simply asking questions.

Archetype #2:

There was a pair of best friends named Pat and Sam, they were really good friends because they’ve been friends since they were sixteen. However, the two started avoiding each other and hadn’t talked for about two months already. It all started when Pat messaged Sam if he wanted to hang out with her and maybe go to an arcade together. When Sam saw the message, he immediately replied that he needed to study at home so he couldn’t go hang out with her. Feeling disappointed, Pat then decided to go out by herself. She arrived at her favorite café and ordered drinks and snacks, she looked out the window and spotted Sam looking like he was having fun with someone else by his side.

She was shocked and started to feel her blood boil, anger slowly overtook her as she watched Sam continue to walk carefreely away with someone else. She paid for her snacks and started running to catch up to Sam. Sam then saw that Pat was storming his way and got confused with what was going on. He was about to greet Pat, but then suddenly Pat yells at him about how she feels betrayed and that he lied about studying at home. Sam tries to explain to Pat but then she then storms off, leaving Sam confused and restless in the middle of the streets while he thought about why Pat was angry and continued on his way, contemplating on his actions . Once Pat got home, she received several calls and messages from Sam, but she had had enough for today and turned off her phone.

During these past few weeks, she bumped into Sam a lot, but when he tried to say anything, she just ignores him and walks away. This has been going on for at least 2 months now and Sam really wanted to know why Pat was mad at him. So, Sam gathered up his courage and decided to go to Pat’s house to figure out what was going on. Once he arrived, he rang the doorbell and prepared himself, Pat peaked through the peephole and saw Sam standing outside, she knew that she couldn’t avoid this forever so she also prepared herself and stayed calm. She opened the door and asked him what he was doing here, Sam said that he wanted to know why Pat was mad at him, so she started to explain that she felt like Sam was betraying her and lying to her, Pat started to lose her cool again and wanted to do nothing but slam the door on his face.

Then Sam started talking, saying that he wasn’t lying, Pat’s eye twitched, he said that he was studying at home but had to go out to get medicine for his grandmother, but then on the way he met his cousin that he hasn’t seen in a long time, so they decided to walk together while catching up on life. Listening to this Pat then realized that she needed to trust her friends more and not let her emotions take control of her. She then apologized to Sam about misunderstanding him and not trusting him and they hug it out.

The second archetype was Pat being overuse of relational predisposition, where I wrote about how she would react to misunderstandings in a violent/angry way.
